Veteran's Services

The Bureau of Veteran's Affairs offers the following services:

1. Record Veterans' discharge papers.

2. Assist in placing veterans in V.A. hospitals and institutions.

3. Assist veterans and widows of the veterans in completing their annual income questionnaires required by the Veteran's Administration. File Claims for the following:

     a. Veteran's compensation

     b. Veteran's pension
          •Blind Veterans
          •Paralized Veterans

     c. Government life insurance

     d. Educational benefits
          •Educational Gratuity
          •Scotland School for Veterans' Children

     e. Widow's pension

     f. Aid to dependent children

     g. Death indemnity compensation

     h. Death burial benefits; provided by both the Federal Government and the County

     i. Erie County headstone benefits: $100.00 towards the purchase of a double headstone. The money is paid to the monument company; also, $35.00 for the base of a government stone.

     j. Daily Liaison with Governor's Veterans' Outreach Center Office of Employment Security, relative to records, employment and benefits.

     k. Daily liaison with the following Service Organizations:

          1. Veteran of Foreign Wars

          2. Military Order of the Purple Heart

          3. American Legion

          4. DAV (Disabled American Veteran)

4. Daily liaison with other Directors of Veterans' Affairs in the Commonwealth.

5. Tracing lost service records and checks.

6. Assist in securing Social Security benefits.

7. Assist veterans in securing employment.

8. Record the names and grave locations of all deceased veterans in Erie County. Yearly, distribute the lists of the graves in Erie County to be decorated for Memorial Day. Also, arrange for the flags to be distributed.
