The Erie County Sheriff's Office Civil Division is responsible for the physical service of a wide variety of Court Orders, Writs, Executions, Summons, Tax Liens, Subpoenas and Protection from Abuse Orders, and other actions.

At the present time, the Erie County Sheriff's Office Civil Division consists of 1 Captain, 2 Lieutenants, 2 Sergeants and 16 Deputies. Lt. Steve Brandon is in charge of Courthouse Security and the Court of Common Pleas. Sgt. Guild controls day-to-day operations of all civil process. Approximately 6,198 civil complaints, together with 1339 levies and 768 Protection from Abuse Orders, were served in 2008.

After service of a Writ or Protection from Abuse Order, the deputy fills out an affidavit of service, which notifies the plaintiff in writing, that service has been made, as well as the time and date of service and the name of the person served.
