SHERIFF'S OFFICE
Erie County Sheriff's Department
School Resource Officers
In 2002, after working closely with the United States Department of Justice, the Erie County Sheriff's Office received a COPS Grant to fund the placement of four Deputy Sheriffs as full-time School Resource Officers. The School districts participating in the development and implementation of this program, North East, Northwestern, General McLane and Harbor Creek, now have a full-time Deputy assigned.Sheriff Bob Merski worked for three years on this program, and was the first Sheriff's Office in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to ever receive a COPS grant. This enabled the placements of 4 Sheriff’s Deputies in Harbor Creek, Northwestern, North East, and General McClane School Districts. Currently, the Sheriff’s Office has placed Deputy Sheriff Jon McEnroe with the Northwestern School District, Deputy Sheriff Robert Wolf with Perseus House Erie County AEP, Deputy Sheriff Paul Hagerty with General McLane School District and Deputy Sheriff Shawn Schwartz with the Harbor Creek School District.
The School Resource Division continues to grow. In the fall of 2009 Deputy Sheriff Jeremy Markham was placed at the Perseus House Collaborative Learning Center. In late spring of 2010 Deputy Sheriff Mark Riggle was placed in the North East School District.
Deputy Sheriff Robert Wolf has been assigned to oversee and coordinate the efforts of the assigned Deputies to ensure efficiency, information and resource sharing, and overall service to the Districts is kept at the highest possible level of professionalism.
The School Resource Officers are involved in their respective schools in a variety of ways. The program focuses primarily on preventive measures that work toward educating the students in the safest possible environment. The placement of full time Deputies insures a first responder to emergencies is always available.
The Deputy Sheriff, as a School Resource Officer, is involved in Parent and Student Organizations, attends sporting events at the school, and presents many Law Enforcement Education and Diversion programs, including the Officer Phil Program in the elementary levels throughout the County of Erie.
The proactive approach to Violence Prevention, Conflict Resolution and Peer Mediation, provides the students and staff with the necessary tools to cope with the many problems facing today's young citizens. The efforts of Sheriff Merski, the assigned Deputies, and the respective school administrations combine to insure the community has the highest quality education in the safest environment possible.
